Everyone knew that Deadpool was starting a new trend in superhero films by making it R-Rated, a trend followed this year by Logan, but no one could have predicted it would lead to a full fledged horror film next. But that is exactly what The New Mutants appears it will be.
Director Josh Boone (The Fault In Our Stars) had commented that his next film The New Mutants would be a horror film, but there were a lot of doubts. After all the film was still set to be based on the popular X-Men spin-off comic book series. Still, now that the first trailer has been released it looks like he’s living up to his promise. There doesn’t appear to be any of the typical superhero film cliches, such as costumes or a supervillian. The film just appears to be a straight up horror film surrounding 5 kids who just happen to have mutant abilities.
The film stars Game of Thrones’ Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair / Wolfsbane (a mutant who turns into a werewolf like creature), The Witch‘s Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin / Magik (A sorceress who can teleport and uses magic from a demon dimension), Stranger Things‘ Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie / Cannonball (who can fly and turn his body rock hard), Henry Zaga of 13 Reasons Why as Sunspot / Roberto da Costa (who is literally a human torch) and The Original‘s Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar / Mirage (who can make her opponents fears or hopes turn into visible illusions). Alice Braga plays a doctor watching over the students, and she tells them they are there because they are dangerous.
The trailer looking scary, and plays out like your typical horror film. Even the creepy rendition of Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall” will raise the hairs on the back of your neck
The New Mutants hits theaters on April 13, 2018.
