Here’s a remake we never thought we’d ever be talking about. The classic cartoon series The Jetsons is about to become a live-action sitcom on ABC.

The Jetsons was a cartoon series that aired on ABC from 1962 to 1963, and then rebooted again from 1985 to 1987. It served as counterpart of another ABC prime-time cartoon series The Flintstones. It featured stories that focuses on the Space-Age family of George, Jane, Judy and Elroy Jetson. While The Flintstones went on to make a couple of live-action films in 1994 and 2000, The Jetsons never received that sort of treatment. that is, until now.

ABC has ordered a pilot of the live-action The Jetsons sitcom, executive produced by Oscar-winning director Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump). The network’s description of the series is “Based on the classic cartoon, this multi-camera sitcom set 100 years in the future looks at America’s favorite future family through a modern filter.” While it’s unclear what sort of feel the new series will have, one can imagine it will be a little edgier than the original, after all Family Guy writer Gary Janetti has been announced as the writer of the pilot. We can only hope it at least keeps the original theme song.
