After four year, Kesha is finally back with a new solo single, and it’s a commentary on the legal battle she’d been waging.
If you are only a casual fan of Kesha’s music, you may not be aware that the 30 year old singer had been waging a legal battle again her former collaborator Dr. Luke. She had accused him of emotionally, physically, and sexually abusing her while they worked together, while Dr. Luke had repeatedly denied the claims. Kesha took the battle to court to try and get out of her contract with his Kemosabe label, and when a New York City judge denied the request, Kesha decided to wait it out. In March Dr. Luke’s contract with Sony Music expired, and since then he has been replaced as the CEO of the label. Hence Kesha finally decided to make some new music.
Kesha’s new single is called Praying, and it seems to be a direct response to the turmoil she’s gone through since her last music was released. She starts by speaking “If there’s a God or whatever, something, somewhere, why have I been abandoned by everyone and everything I’ve ever known, I’ve ever loved? Stranded, what is the lesson? What is the point? God, give me a sign or I have to give up. I can’t do this anymore. Please just let me die. Being alive hurts too much.”
The lyrics of the song focus on a person who put her “through hell”, while stating “I hope you’re somewhere praying, praying/ I hope your soul is changing, changing/ I hope you find your peace falling on your knees, praying.” The song continues its focus on the unnamed person, with Kesha singing “You said that I was done/ Well, you were wrong, and now the best is yet to come/ ‘Cause I can make it on my own/ I don’t need you/ I’ve found a strength I’ve never known.”
Kesha told her fans on Wednesday that a new single was coming today. In a video released on social media she said “Your support and love and kindness has gotten me through hands-down the hardest time of my entire life. My new song, ‘Praying,’ is coming out tomorrow, and I couldn’t have done this without you. I f—ing love you.”
