Games of Thrones may have opened season seven with the highest ratings HBO has ever had, and even though Ed Sheeran had a small cameo in the premiere, the music superstar isn’t feeling the love. In fact fan reaction has been so negative that the 26 year old has decided to delete his Twitter account.
Sheeran appeared on Game of Thrones in a short scene where he played a Lannister soldier sitting around a campfire singing and eating with some fellow soldiers when fan favourite Ayra Stark (Maisie Williams) rode up to them. The soldiers convince her to sit down and have a bite, and the scene that unfolded was one of the lightest and playful in the entire run of the series. A lot of the long time watchers found the scene to be out of place, after all the show is known for it’s extremely dark and violent scenes, and thought the show would have been better off without it. It really didn’t add anything to the episode either, so it wouldn’t have been missed. Fans started tweeting their displeasure at Sheeran, and then less than 24 hours later, his account was deleted.
Sheeran is no stranger to taking breaks from social media, but he hadn’t deleted his account before. The singer had stated in the past that he was only going to use Twitter to post updates, and not to read anything, because he claimed the negative comments he read in the past ruined his day.
The entire thing could turn out to be a coincidence, and Sheeran was planning on quitting Twitter anyway, but the timing seems to indicate the singer had read something he didn’t want to. We’ll see how fans takes to him when he appears on The Simpsons this fall.
